Key Application Data for the CPT-DVR2016

Assuming you already know about the benefits of a DVR as compared to VCR's here are key points you should know about installing the CPT-DVR2016.

How Much Recording Time Do I Have?

  1. Do not try to think of recording time in terms of a VCR. A VCR runs at a specific speed and depending on the setting and length of tape used (T-120, T-160), a week's continuous recording can be simply achieved. This will be in a time-lapse mode and you will not record a fluid picture, but a kind of stop motion effect. If a number of cameras are recorded via a mux, this is even more pronounced.
  2. With a hard-drive recorder we are storing digital information to a disc and we now must consider video pictures in terms of digital information and how much storage space each image requires. In the "setup" function of the CPT-DVR2016 there are a number of settings available to us for adjusting each camera for required image detail, rate of recording, etc. Depending on these settings, we require 2 - 4KB per image of disc space. The CPT-DVR2016 is available with hard-drive capacities of between 20GB to 130GB, so it is a matter of math to calculate how much time we can expect to record onto the hard-drive. A simple formula to give an approximate recording time is:

    i. With cameras at "medium' setting: 50/n x G = h
    ii. where n = number of cameras 1. G = size of hard-drive 2. h = hours of recording

  3. We have now had a number of units installed and at one site a 50 GB unit has 8 cameras all set at a medium setting. All cameras are running continuously and we are achieving about 12 days before the drive is full and begins to recycle.
  4. From this it can be seen it is important to conserve hard drive space. We must spend a bit of time in the setup to do this. The CPT-DVR2016 allows us to setup each and every camera individually. We can adjust the cameras watching finer detail such as cash, to a higher resolution. We can adjust cameras watching less detailed images such as traffic flow, to a lower resolution. We can disable cameras so as they only record when necessary and not store hours and hours of nothing. The objective is to only record as much as required to suite the needs and requirements of each specific situation. Do not fill the hard drive with unnecessary detail or unwanted images, this only makes its more cumbersome when it comes time to retrieve data.

Key Features Of The CPT-DVR2016

  1. The CPT-DVR2016 has the most user friendly GUI (graphic user interface) of any system available today. All activities can be achieved by simple clicks of the mouse and menu tabs. There are no special operating functions that need be learned or referred to in the manual.
  2. The CPT-DVR2016 is a Pentaplex machine. It is able to carry out 5 activities simultaneously, viz. Watch, Record, Playback, Remote View and Download To Backup. Not all manufacturers can achieve this.
  3. Every unit has a modem and LAN card installed allowing remote viewing via phone line, Internet or local area network. With some other manufacturers this is a chargeable option.
  4. The software for remote viewing of the CPT-DVR2016 is supplied free with every unit. With some other manufacturers this is a chargeable option.
  5. Images are downloaded in a common jpeg format. They should therefore be viewable on most computers. This is important if a picture of an incident need be supplied to the authorities. Every image has a Chained Fingerprint Encryption. It will be evident if any image has been edited or changed.

Service and Support

Unlike many of its competitors, this machine is assembled from standard parts which can be purchased at any computer store. The two great advantages are first that it makes for very good cost performance, as all the economies of scale come to bear, and secondly parts for repairs are readily available, and inexpensive. This is not to say that Burtek will not warrant the product, or course we do with a full three year warranty, it just means that the customer will not have long waits and high parts costs for not warranty repairs.
